Is Butyrate similar to a probiotic?Updated a year ago

No. Butyrate is not a type of bacteria; instead, it's a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) also known as a postbiotic. It's produced in the lower part of your colon by beneficial probiotic bacteria and is absorbed by the cells lining your colon. These cells use butyrate as a crucial source of nutrition. If there's a shortage of healthy bacteria in your colon—perhaps due to taking antibiotics, for example—it can result in an insufficient supply of butyrate.
